January 2017 Shop Brew - Falcons Claws With Drew

The December Shop Brew Session had to be postponed to Sunday, January, January 15. The signups are carried with the date, including the wait list.

Board Member & Grand Hydrometer Drew Beechum will lead the crew in brewing Falcons Claws, the our version of Samichlaus, a monster dark Swiss lager that was once the strongest beer in the world at 14% ABV. It started in 1979 when Swiss-based Hürlimann Brewery decided to brew a Christmas lager on December 6—St. Nicholas Day (feast day). Until its doors closed in 1997, Hürlimann Brewery produced Samichlaus every year on December 6, and built up a loyal fan base along the way. Be ready for a year of lagering before bottling, and you'll be enjoying it next Christmas by the fire! READ MORE.

Doug King Memorial Homebrew Competition Winners

2017 Doug King Memorial Homebrew Competition!

It's that time of year again when we fondly remember our compadre Doug King. Doug was a brewer's brewer - always there to lend a hand to the club or another brewer. He was also fond of experimentation and was well known for his crazy experiments (loafs of rye bread, potatoes, tortillas - all in the mash) and his love of lagers. He won the 1996 California State Fair for his Dougweiser.

Sage Lime Wit Beer

July Club Shop Brew Belgian Witbier with Matt & Andy On Sunday July 31st, just in time to still call it July, Matt Myerhoff and Andy Ziskin let a shop brew-crew in brewing a Belgian Witbier with a little bit of a twist. In looking at Jamil's Brewing Classic Styles we noticed he preferred using fresh orange zest and chamomile tea in his recipe. To give our beer a little more unique character we decided to use fresh lime zest, leaves and sage mostly from Andy's garden. We had an excellent brew crew, thank you to Jay, Susie, Scot, Justin, Jeremy and Cullen. To pass time during the mash, Matt brought a projector and we watched a few beer related videos in the comfort of the air conditioned club house. Of course, there was plenty of really great Homebrew shared by all. We may have over sparged just a bit and missed our OG by a few points, but a great day was had by all. A very special thanks to Alex from Westlake Brewing for donating a huge pitch of yeast for our Brewers! Look for the beer to make an appearance at the September club meeting and the Oktoberfest party. Recipe for 40G Estimated OG was 1.051 / Actual OG 1.044

August Club Shop Brew Session - Black IPA with Ed!

Falcons, sign up now for the August Club Shop Brew Session as Board Member Ed Kochanowski leads the crew in brewing a Black IPA, that style you hate to love or love to hate. Cascadian Dark Ale? American Style Black Ale? Who cares! Either way, you know it will be deeply, darkly hoppy! Black IPA is a beer with the dryness, hop-forward balance, and flavor characteristics of an American IPA, only darker in color – but without strongly roasted or burnt flavors. The flavor of darker malts is gentle and supportive, not a major flavor component.
